How long is the boat ride from La Pavona to Tortuguero?

The trip takes about 1 hour along the Suerte River and Tortuguero canals. Exact timing can vary slightly with river level and daily conditions.

What are the shared-boat schedules?

La Pavona → Tortuguero: 7:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 3:15 p.m., and 4:15 p.m. Tortuguero → La Pavona: 4:40 a.m., 6:40 a.m., 8:40 a.m., 10:40 a.m., and 2:00 p.m. Daily service; last boat to Tortuguero is 4:15 p.m. and last return to La Pavona is 2:00 p.m.

How much does the shared boat cost?

Approximately (≈ $9 USD) · ₡4,000 CRC per person, each way. The exact fare is confirmed when coordinating your trip. Children under 3 ride free.

How much does the lodge transfer cost?

It varies by lodge. For the listed direct transfers, a round trip costs approximately $30–35 USD per person. Message us on WhatsApp with the exact name of your lodging.

Can you take me to the village or my lodging dock?

Yes. Smith provides boat transportation from La Pavona to Tortuguero Village and to lodge and hotel docks along the canals. We do not book accommodation or represent hotels: share the exact lodging name so we can confirm the arrival dock and return pickup.

Arriving at La Pavona

Can I drive all the way to Tortuguero village?

No. There is no road into Tortuguero village. You drive or take a bus to La Pavona dock (via Cariari); the final leg is by boat.

Where do I park my car at La Pavona?

There is parking at the dock area. On arrival, our team can guide you to the right spot. Share your ETA on WhatsApp so we can watch for you more easily.

How early should I arrive?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure. That gives time to find the boat, load luggage, and board without rushing.

What should I do when I arrive?

Look for the Transporte Smith team at the dock (Rogelio coordinates boarding). Keep your WhatsApp confirmation handy. Use the restroom before boarding if needed—dock facilities usually have a small local fee.

Booking & payment

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes—we recommend it, especially in high season, weekends, and holidays. Shared boats have limited seats, and private charters are scheduled by availability.

Can I pay on arrival?

Payment options can be discussed on WhatsApp when you coordinate. We recommend confirming your boat before you leave for La Pavona so your seat and time are secured.

What does round trip mean?

Round trip means going to Tortuguero and later returning to La Pavona (or your agreed point). In Spanish that is “ida y vuelta.” If you only need one direction, ask for one-way / “solo ida.”

How much is a private boat?

Starting at approximately $200 USD. The exact price depends on the number of passengers, destination, and date. Ask on WhatsApp.

Safety & weather

Is the boat safe?

We operate with experienced local captains. Boats carry life jackets for adults and children, onboard safety equipment, and vessel third-party liability policies. Current validity and scope are confirmed when coordinating. Navigation conditions are checked before departure.

What happens if it rains?

Service usually runs in typical rain. Our boats have protective covers for passengers and luggage. Only extreme weather or unsafe river conditions may cause delays or schedule adjustments.

Do I need a National Park ticket for the transfer?

For the La Pavona ↔ Tortuguero / hotel boat transfer itself you typically do not need a National Park entry ticket. If you plan park trails or guided park tours, those tickets are separate.

Practical tips

What should I bring for the boat ride?

Wear comfortable clothes, bring sunscreen and insect repellent, a light layer if it cools down, and a dry bag for electronics. Protect documents and phones from spray. Pack bags closed; the dock team helps with luggage handling.

Do you speak English?

You can message us in English or Spanish on WhatsApp. At the dock, the local team will guide you through the essentials for boarding.

What are your support hours?

Usual attention hours: Monday–Friday 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Costa Rica time). For very early departures, coordinate the day before.

Where can private / hotel transfers depart from?

Besides La Pavona, private and hotel transfers can be arranged from Caño Blanco and Moín depending on your itinerary. Ask on WhatsApp for availability and pricing.
